Here are links to some of the gear I use. Yes, I have a lot of gear and I choose which gear to use based on where I’m going and who will be with me. I do indeed camp alone in my 8-person tents. This gives me lots of room to be in the tent if there happens to be bad weather. Feel free to contact me if you have specific gear questions. I’m always willing to do a gear review.
Tents
When purchasing a tent, always consider the physical dimensions – including the center height. Usually the sides are not as high as the center. Not all tents have enough internal height to allow you to stand up fully in them, so decide what’s important to you. Be sure to buy a tarp that’s about the same size as the floor/footprint of the tent to protect the tent from any debris on the ground.
- Montana 8 person (16 w x 7 d x 6 h). Here is a review I did previously.
- Coleman 8 person instant tent (14 w x 10 d x 6.5 h). This tent is easy to put up alone and the poles are built in.
- Rainfly for Coleman 8 person instant tent. Separate purchase that’s worth it in a storm.
- Coleman Flatwoods II 4 person (9 w x 7 d x 5 h)
- Coleman Sundome 4 person (9 w x 7 d x 4 h). A good size tent for travel camping.
- Coleman Skylodge Instant 8-person Camping Tent (12 w x 9.5 d x 6.5 h)
- Napier Sportz SUV Tent (8.5 w x 8.5 d x 7 h). This tent attaches to an SUV and can stand alone. You can see how I use it here as an SUV tent. Here is a look at how it sets up as a stand alone tent.
- GigaTent Pop Up Pod. This is a great changing/potty space especially when you have a tent that you cannot stand up in. If you want something with a window to use a shower head with, I’d suggest the WolfWise Pop Up Privacy Shower Tent.
Sleeping
Over the years I’ve used sleeping bags on thermal pads, various air mattresses and cots. My preference is for a cot and I put a sleeping bag on it for padding. They are raised off the floor and don’t require a pump. I have found that in cooler months, the air mattresses keep in cold air and I feel colder because of it. As well, they tend to start losing air over time.

Kitchen
I enjoy cooking and baking when I camp – I do not enjoy having to stoke charcoal or wood anywhere. My collection of cooking appliances are gas based – mostly propane and I have a butane stove as well. I bake bread and make cookies, biscuits, cornbread (recipe), mac and cheese, scalloped potatoes, vegetables, etc. while camping so I always have an oven with me. I choose which one to take with me depending on the space in my vehicle for that trip. I’ve even taken my Camp Chef pizza oven on trips.
